What Makes a Namkaran Date Auspicious

A pandit checks a few things in the Panchang before approving a date:

• Nakshatra. Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati and Shatabhisha are favoured.
• Tithi. Most tithis work, but Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya are avoided.
• Weekday. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are preferred. The final call depends on the overall muhurat, so some August dates land on other days when the nakshatra and tithi are strong enough.
• Baby's horoscope. The birth nakshatra and pada determine the first letter of the name, so the pandit factors in the baby's specific chart, not just the general date.

August 2026 Namkaran Dates

That's eight dates spread across the month, roughly one every four days. The 5th (Wednesday), 13th (Thursday), 17th (Monday) and 21st (Friday) land on the traditionally preferred weekdays for Namkaran. When to Hold the Ceremony After Birth

The traditional window is the 11th or 12th day after birth, once the Sutika (postnatal purification) period is over. If that doesn't line up with a muhurat, the 21st day and 30th day are common alternatives. In practice, plenty of families hold the Namkaran on any shubh day within the first year, especially when they need time for the mother and baby to recover, or when relatives need to travel. What matters more than speed is landing on a good muhurat with the right people present.
